Root Canal Therapy – what it is and when it’s needed

A root canal isn’t something to dread — it’s a restorative treatment that’s meant to relieve pain and save your natural tooth when the inner nerve gets inflamed or infected. Modern root canal therapy is efficient, gentle, and nowhere near the horror stories you might’ve heard. Most patients say it feels like getting a filling — just with a little more purpose.

What Root Canal Therapy Does

Inside every tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp — it’s the nerve and blood supply that keeps the tooth alive. When that tissue gets irritated from decay, cracks, or trauma, it can lead to lingering pain, temperature sensitivity, or swelling. And sometimes — the scary part — the nerve can quietly lose vitality without any symptoms at all. An infection can sit there without making a scene.

A root canal simply removes that inflamed or infected pulp, disinfects the inside of the tooth, and seals it up with a strong, protective material. Think of it like doing a filling — but for the inside of the tooth instead of the outside. We don’t remove your tooth; we save it! The tooth stays right where it belongs, usually finished off with a crown so it can chew comfortably for years. That’s really all a root canal is — the process of rescuing a tooth that’s worth keeping!

When It’s Recommended

You might need a root canal if you’re dealing with:

  • Persistent tooth pain or throbbing, especially when chewing or with hot/cold foods
  • Sensitivity that lingers even after the temperature changes
  • Swelling or tenderness near the gums
  • Darkening of a tooth, which can be a sign of internal damage
  • Your tooth is shown to be nonvital (not alive) during your exam — sometimes previous trauma or dental work can quietly take the vitality out of a tooth without you even realizing it. The process can be symptom-free for a long time. That’s what checkups are for!
