Preventative Cleanings

Preventive dental cleanings at Smile Story remove plaque and tartar buildup that brushing alone can't reach — keeping your gums healthy, your teeth strong, and giving us the chance to catch small issues before they become bigger ones.

What Is a Preventive Cleaning?

A preventive cleaning — clinically called prophylaxis — is a routine dental visit designed for patients with healthy gums and no active gum disease. During a cleaning, your provider removes calcified plaque (tartar) and soft plaque buildup from areas that regular brushing and flossing can't fully reach: along the gumline, between teeth, and behind the back molars.

The appointment also includes a thorough examination, updated X-rays as needed, and a review of any changes in your oral health since your last visit. It's not just a polish — it's a comprehensive health checkpoint for your mouth.

Why Regular Cleanings Matter

Even patients with excellent home care develop buildup over time. Minerals in saliva calcify onto the tooth surface — particularly around the gumline and behind the lower front teeth — and once tartar forms, it can only be removed with professional instruments. Left in place, it creates an environment where bacteria thrive and gum disease can take hold.

Beyond plaque control, regular visits give us the opportunity to spot early signs of issues — a suspicious spot, a cracked tooth, gum recession, early decay — while they're still simple to address. Catching a cavity at its earliest stage means a small filling. Missing it for another year might mean a crown, or worse, a root canal.

Who Needs a Preventive Cleaning?

Anyone with healthy gums and no active periodontal disease. Most patients are on a twice-a-year schedule, though some benefit from more frequent visits — every 3 to 4 months — based on individual risk factors for decay or gum disease. We'll recommend a schedule that makes sense for your specific situation rather than defaulting to the same recommendation for everyone.

If you have active gum disease, a standard preventive cleaning isn't the right treatment — you'd need a deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) first. We assess your gum health at every visit and adjust your care accordingly.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

A routine cleaning at Smile Story typically runs 60–90 minutes for new patients (including a comprehensive exam and X-rays) and 45–60 minutes for returning patients. Here's what the visit looks like:

  1. A review of your health history and any changes since your last visit
  2. Digital X-rays as clinically indicated
  3. A thorough examination of your teeth, gums, and oral tissues — including an oral cancer screening
  4. Removal of plaque and tartar using ultrasonic and hand instruments
  5. Polishing to remove surface stains and smooth tooth surfaces
  6. Flossing and a rinse
  7. A review of your home care routine with personalized product recommendations where helpful

There's no downtime, no recovery, and most patients leave feeling noticeably cleaner — and clearer on what to keep an eye on before the next visit.

The Bigger Picture: Oral Health and Overall Health

Gum health isn't isolated to your mouth. Research consistently links periodontal disease to systemic conditions including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and complications during pregnancy. Regular cleanings are one of the most straightforward things you can do for your overall health — not just your smile.

Preventative Cleanings — Frequently Asked Questions

How often do I need a dental cleaning?

Most patients benefit from a cleaning every six months. However, patients with a higher risk for gum disease, decay, or other oral health concerns may be recommended a 3–4 month schedule. We'll assess your individual situation and suggest a frequency that reflects where your oral health actually is — not just the standard default.

Is a cleaning the same as a deep cleaning?

No. A preventive cleaning (prophylaxis) is for patients with healthy gums and removes plaque and tartar above and just at the gumline. A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) is a therapeutic procedure for patients with active gum disease, going significantly deeper beneath the gumline to address bacterial infection in the periodontal pockets. If your gums need a deep cleaning, we'll tell you — and doing a standard cleaning instead won't resolve the underlying problem.

Does a cleaning hurt?

For most patients with healthy gums, a cleaning is comfortable and straightforward. Some sensitivity is normal if your gums are inflamed or if it's been a while since your last visit — but that typically improves as your gum health does. If you're particularly sensitive, let us know and we'll take extra steps to keep you comfortable throughout.

What's included at a cleaning appointment?

A routine visit at Smile Story includes the cleaning itself, a comprehensive examination, X-rays as clinically indicated, an oral cancer screening, and a review of your home care routine. We also provide personalized product recommendations where there's something specific that would genuinely help your situation.

How long does a cleaning appointment take?

ew patients should plan on 60–90 minutes — this includes a comprehensive exam, X-rays, and the cleaning itself. Returning patients without concerns typically run 45–60 minutes. We don't rush.

What if I haven't been to the dentist in a long time?

It's one of the most common situations we see, and there's no judgment here. Depending on how much buildup is present and the state of your gum health, we may recommend starting with a deep cleaning rather than a standard prophylaxis — and we'll explain exactly why if that's the case. The important thing is getting back on track, and we'll build a plan from wherever you're starting.

Do cleanings whiten teeth?

Cleanings remove surface stains and polish the tooth surface, which often makes teeth look noticeably brighter and cleaner. But a cleaning isn't the same as whitening — it won't change the underlying shade of your enamel. If you're interested in whitening after your cleaning, we offer both Zoom® and KöR® professional whitening systems.

Is a dental cleaning covered by insurance?

Most dental insurance plans cover two preventive cleanings per year at 100% or close to it — it's typically the best-covered benefit in any dental plan. If you don't have insurance, ask us about our membership plan, which includes cleanings as part of the annual cost.
